The Dentist Job Hiring Process: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Looking for your next opportunity as a dentist can be exciting, but it can also raise a lot of questions. What does the hiring process look like? How long will it take? What should I expect at each stage? At My Community Dental Centers (MCDC), we believe in making the hiring experience clear, supportive, and informative from your very first interaction.

Whether you’re a new graduate or an experienced provider considering a change, here’s what you can expect when applying for dental jobs with us, and how to prepare with confidence.

What to Expect in the Hiring Process

Every candidate’s journey may be slightly different, but the core steps of our hiring process are designed to be smooth, informative, and respectful of your time and goals.

  • Formal Phone Screen – Your first step is typically a phone conversation with one of our dedicated recruitment team members who will walk you through the basics of the opportunity.
    • What we cover during this call:
      • Locations where we’re currently hiring
      • Compensation, benefits, and work schedule
      • Questions about your clinical experience

If you choose to move forward, you’ll be asked to complete a clinical skills checklist so we can better understand your experience and strengths throughout your dental career.

  • Interview with a Dental Director – Next, you’ll speak with one of our Dental Directors, virtually or in person. This conversation usually lasts about an hour and is focused on your clinical approach, patient care philosophy, and how you might fit into our center’s team and schedule.
  • Optional Center Tour – If your interview with the Dental Director was virtual and if you’re local or visiting the area, we may invite you for an in-person center tour. This step is optional but can be a great way to get a feel for our work environment, meet team members, and see how our centers operate day to day.
  • Offer Letter and Credentialing – If we are a good fit for your career growth, we’ll extend a formal offer letter outlining pay, benefits, and your expected start date. Once you accept, you’ll receive an email with next steps tailored to your specific situation, including credentialing information if you hold a valid MI license.

Understanding the Timeline

Every step in the hiring process plays an important role in ensuring a smooth transition into your new role for your dental career. Here’s a general idea of the timeline after your offer is accepted:

  • Licensing: Generally takes 6–8 weeks, though this can vary depending on state boards and seasonal demand.
  • Credentialing: Takes approximately 4–6 weeks after your packet is complete. Note: Credentialing cannot begin until you are fully licensed in Michigan.
  • Additional Paperwork: While you complete licensing and credentialing, you’ll also receive: Background check instructions and new hire paperwork

Your recruiter will have regular check-ins along the way to ensure you are kept informed. We do our best to keep the process moving efficiently so you can start your new role as soon as possible.
